Mount Mat Madness
1/18/08
I have updated the schedule to reflect our current results as of today. This weekend is the highly regarded Mount Mat Madness Tournament at Catonsville College of Baltimore County. With good reason, this is considered as the toughest tournament in Maryland. There are multiple teams with state titles under their belt and many weights are loaded with state champions and place-winners. It will be another good test for this young Tiger team as they step up to meet the challenge. Leading the way for the Tigers is Matt Jackson with the number one seed at 145 pounds. Helping to carry the load is Danny Cox who garnered a number four seed at 160 pounds. Also seeded for Rising Sun is Adam Heffelfinger (103)- 16th, Ethan Ulrich (112)- 15th, Richard Christie (119)- 11th, Shawn Barney (130)- 12th, Austin Glessner (135)- 13th, Kyle Barney (152)- 16th, and Andrew Baranski (285)- 11th. Now that all of the team has good varsity experience, Rising Sun is looking to improve on their showing from the first tournament of the year which is a tournament of comparable quality.

Tigers Dual Meet Streak Continues
1/13/08
Rising Sun is currently 8-0 on the season in duals. They have outscored their opponents 451-135. The closest match on the year was a 36-35 victory over Unionville of Pennsylvania. Two of the wins came against conference rivals Harford Tech and Fallston, in one sided victories with the final scores being 57-13 and 46-15 respectively. Other teams the Tigers earned wins over this season are Perryville (71-9), Bo Manor (63-6), Joppatowne (65-15), North Harford (56-21), and James M. Bennett (57-11). The Tigers are focusing on one match at a time with an ultimate goal of returning to the state dual meet tournament. Remaining on the schedule is John Carroll, Archbishop Spalding, C.M. Wright, North East, Elkton, and Bel Air. There are two home matches remaining on the season, a tri-meet on 1/30 against North East and Elkton and a dual against Bel Air on 2/6. If you get a chance and have not yet, come out and cheer on the Tigers.

Tigers Place Dead Center at WOTS, Win Smithsburg
1/13/08
In their first appearance ever the Tigers placed dead center in a strong field of 26 teams at the prestigious War on the Shore Tournament held at Stephen Decatur High School. Rising Sun came home with two individual champions and two eighth place finishers. Matt Jackson, who is currently undefeated, downed tough competition in order to win 145 pound weight-class. In the semifinals Matt beat P.J. Barch of Sussex Central, DE by a score of 6-3 and in the finals Jackson defeated Tanner Schaffer of LaPlata 3-1. The key to Matt’s championship is his uncanny abilities in the neutral position in both defense and offense. Danny Cox (160), also currently undefeated, brought home the other championship for the Tigers when he defeated Edwin Jackson of Mount St. Joe’s by a score of 6-4. He also faced stiff competition during his semi-final bout when he faced Brandon Hazel of Sussex Tech who was ranked in the nation at the time. Danny beat Hazel with a takedown in overtime.
Placing eighth were Richard Christie (119) and Andrew Baranski (285). Others that had strong showings at the tournament but did not place were Kyle Barney (152), Austin Glessner (140) and Shawn Barney (130).
For the fourth consecutive year Rising Sun took home the team title of the Smithsburg Invitational. Eight Tigers clawed their way to the finals and all of the wrestlers placed in the top six of their respective weights. The champions were Richard Christie (119), Austin Glessner (135), Matt Jackson (145), Danny Cox (160) and Andrew Baranski (285). Placing second were Adam Heffelfinger (103), Ethan Ulrich (112), and Kyle Barney (152). Shawn Barney (130) was the lone third place finisher. At fourth was Jason Robinson (125), Sam Guethler (140), Justin Gainey (171) and Seth Gerhart (215). Finishing sixth was Josh Gerczak at 189 pounds.

HOF- Hall of Famer
1/13/08
Coach Cox was inducted into the Maryland chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in a ceremony conducted at the start of the wrestling season. Coach Cox was recognized for his commitment to wrestling and molding not just strong-willed and minded student athletes, but young men. Many of his former athletes and supporters were in attendance for the ceremony. There is a section of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame dedicated to the Maryland inductees where there is a plaque dedicated to Coach Cox. The Hall of Fame is located in Stillwater, Ok. This served as closure to a very exciting year for Coach Cox with his team finishing undefeated and meeting all of their intended goals by winning regional and state duals and also the regional and state individual tournaments.
